The Sweetest Swing in Baseball

UVa Drama

A comedic-drama in the round, Sweetest Swing required balancing the seriousness of the subject matter, mental illness and identity, with the comedy of a female painter portraying an iconic male baseball figure. This was a central focus of the music used during scene changes. The background sound score also created a sense of comfort or discomfort based on the painter's mental and emotional state.

The painter in attendance at a party she would prefer to avoid. The dense party noises played loudly underscore her discomfort.

The constant hum of fluorescent lights played softly creates a comforting pad for the painter now that she is away from her stressors.

Minimalist music provided an abstract soundtrack that lent itself well to the play's off kilter nature. The density and aural chaos of this early transition piece mirrors the main character's inner discord.

As the painter becomes more confident and comfortable with herself, the music becomes less chaotic and more whimsical as she becomes content with her mad existence.
